The Artist’s Way “Date With Yourself”

Here’s a secret: the most important relationship in your life isn’t the one you have with your children, your spouse or your significant other. It certainly has nothing to do with keeping up with the Joneses. Your #1 relationship is the one you cultivate with yourself!

You can’t expect others to give you what you don’t give to yourself.

  • Want love? Love yourself.
  • Want respect? Respect yourself.
  • Want calm? Meditate.
  • Want appreciation? Appreciate yourself.
  • Want a hot date? Take yourself out on one!

We all deplete our internal creativity, ideas and resources as we go through life.  Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, we all have an “inner creative” that expresses itself in our work, our social lives, our relationships and even in our outlook on life.  Over time, we can lose that spark.  Life starts to seem routine.  Our creativity becomes a bit repetitive (cooking the same meals, doing the same thing at work, being stuck in a crafting rut etc.)

When you neglect to follow through on the things you want or intend to do and it feels like there just isn’t enough time …

  •  … or you think “I used to enjoy doing that … but I just can’t get inspired to start it again” …
  • … or you begin to feel worn down and the world is seems gray and routine …

… this is when The Artist’s Way “date with yourself” comes in.

The fun “Artist’s Way Date with yourself” is a self-love inspired life hack created by Julia Cameron in her classic creativity-unblocking book The Artist’s Way. The book is the foundation for my tele-class that begins Monday January 22, 8pm CST. (Click here for more details on the class, there’s still space for a few more attendees! It will be chock full of feel-good life hacks like this one.)

The idea is to take yourself on a date once per week to “fill the well” of creativity.  Here are the rules:

  • You must do the activity alone.  Having anyone else with you will change your behavior, and you want to get in touch with your inner creative!
  • The activity should be fun!  Find something that appeals to you and do it.

You do not have to be an artist to do an Artist’s Date. In fact, this “date yourself” philosophy is adhered to pretty well by actual artists. I’ve found as a life and retirement coach that it’s those of us non-artists who typically need a reminder to fuel ourselves with a creativity date! Whether you’re an entrepreneur, working on a side-hustle or just want to give your life a little more color and pep, the “date with yourself” is a fantastic way to fuel all of these exploits and more.

Stop waiting for “the one.” You are the one! And the best news? All of your other relationships will be so much healthier as a result. I am not being flippant. Engage with a coach to help you stay on track. This journey is all about trust and your higher power.

Let’s focus on how we want to feel and who we want to be when we reach our goals, knowing that creativity and joy will naturally result!
