The Beginners Guide to Meditation

Start small.

If you want to meditate but don’t know where to begin, start small. Sit quietly, have a candle in front of you, light the candle and slowly breath in and out. Notice the flame. If a thought comes to mind, imagine the thought as a leaf floating away, perhaps flowing close to you, yet then floating away.

When you’re breathing in and out, make a sound - or mantra - like home, or ohm. This will help you to continue to focus solely on your breath.

I’m not a professional meditator but I find myself wanting to take a break from obligations, the to-do list, and the news. It can be a good additional practice to your morning routine for a positive day ahead. Don’t have time? This can be done in one minute.

This is a good start to practicing daily self care. Before you know it, you’ll not need a candle. Soon, you’ll be able to clear out negative thoughts while you’re walking the dog. If you’re living in the moment, you’re less likely to be overwhelmed. Try this out just for yourself.
